TORONTO - SayWeCanFly's "Song of the Sparrow" video has aced MTVU's "The Freshmen" competition, awarding the video with future airplay on the college-targeted channel.
"Song of the Sparrow" was selected from a group of five up -and-coming artists by viewers who casted votes online.
MTVU is viewed at over 802 college campuses, where it plays commons areas, dorms and libraries. MTVU also reaches 55 million homes.
"It's amazing to see a platform like MTV still caring about up and coming artists," SayWeCanFly's Braden Barrie said. "It takes a lot of work to move forward in the music industry, and I can honestly say this has given me new perspective. MTV is clearly alive and well and I think really helps everyone connect and feel like family."
Barrie, who is the artist behind the SayWeCanFly moniker, has built his career through personal connections with fans through social media and live performances. With the release of his debut full-length, Between The Roses, those dedicated fans have shown undying support while helping to spread the word about SayWeCanFly.
"It means the world to me that everyone cared so much to make this happen," Barrie said. "It's moments like these when I think we all feel and understand how each of us plays such an important role in helping SayWeCanFly grow, and I hope everyone knows this was our win, not mine."
TORONTO - When it came time for Braden Barrie to create a video for "Song of the Sparrow," the first single from SayWeCanFly's debut album Between The Roses, he knew it had to be just right to reflect the intense personal nature of the song.
Filmed on a snowy beach at Sandbanks Provincial Park in Picton, Ontario, Barrie endured freezing temperatures to capture the perfect images to complement the song's message.
"This is the story of a lost boy and his soul, searching for a happiness that is only found after experiencing all the pain of finding it," Barrie explained. "This video shoot may have been the coldest I've ever been in my life, but I'll always do everything I need to do for my art."
The mesmerizing clip follows Barrie as he portrays the lost boy on his journey to happiness. Shot by Benjamin Head and Nathan Pigeon of Reel Tang Films, the video was filmed in black and white with subtle hints of color.
"We were originally going to edit the footage to be black and white but one of the reasons I decided not to was because I loved the weird colors of the feathers in it," Barrie said. "I felt they were the focal point of the story and clearly symbolize the idea of transformation, and wanted to use them to give some life to the story."
"Song of the Sparrow" will debut on exclusively Alternative Press' website (www.altpress.com) today at noon EST and will also be added to MTV HITS!'s Fresh Faces block later this week.
"This is the first time I'm truly happy with the visual representation of one of my songs," said Barrie. "I took so much time writing the concept on my own, and I really enjoyed doing that for the first time. I'm so excited for everyone to see it, because I feel that it really pulls people into the strange world of Between The Roses and will get them ready for future videos and content."
Between The Roses was officially released on January 22 and debuted at #14 on Billboard's Heatseekers chart and #5 on the iTunes singer/songwriter chart.

Officially released on January 22, Between The Roses, debuted at #14 on Billboard's Heatseekers chart and #5 on the iTunes singer/songwriter chart. "Every time I release a piece of music, it feels like I'm taking a step forward in my life and moving forward from the experiences I've captured in those songs," Barrie said. "This has taken over so much of my heart and soul over the past year and it feels like I'm about to share the biggest piece of my story yet.
